BYD introduces a 14.5 MWh utility-scale energy storage system (BESS)

At the #IDEE25 event in Shenzhen, BYD Energy Storage launched a brand-new range of energy storage solutions, covering everything from cells to utility-scale systems. The new portfolio includes:

  • HaoHan utility-scale BESS
  • Next-generation converter #GCFlux #PCS
  • Station- and system-level energy management system #GCMaster #EMS

Together, these components form a grid-forming solution designed for large-scale projects, with a focus on improving system efficiency and grid resilience.

HaoHan – Utility-scale energy storage system (BESS)

The HaoHan system uses the world’s largest 2,710 Ah Blade battery for energy storage, offering more than 300% higher capacity compared to conventional battery cells, along with a significant improvement in energy density.

  • Minimum capacity: 14.5 MWh (equivalent to 10 MWh capacity in a 20 ft container)
  • Volumetric energy density: 233.8 kWh/m³, with a space utilization rate of 52.1% – about 40% higher than the industry average
  • Modular design with four transportable battery cabinets

Beyond high energy density, the HaoHan system also emphasizes safety, efficiency, and long lifecycle. It meets the IP66 protection rating, making it dust- and waterproof even in demanding conditions:

  • Sensitive components last about 100% longer
  • Failure rate reduced by around 70%
  • Operation and maintenance costs reduced by around 70%

GC Flux PCS – High-performance inverter

An energy storage system must not only store energy but also deliver it flexibly and efficiently. The GC Flux PCS inverter provides major improvements in power performance and grid support capabilities:

  • Capacity range: 2.5–10 MW, about 38% higher than the industry average
  • Maximum power density: 1,474 kW/m², about 130% higher than the typical level
  • Overload capacity: up to 3x for 10 seconds
  • Maximum efficiency: 99.35%

In addition, the GC Flux PCS includes advanced grid-forming features:

  • Active inertia response (up to 25 seconds)
  • Broadband damping (1–1500 Hz)
  • Ultra-fast voltage/frequency control (<100 ms)

These features enhance reliability, stability, and seamless transitions between grid-connected and islanded operation.

GC Master EMS – The “brain” of the system

BYD also unveiled the system’s “brain” – the GC Master EMS energy management system, complementing the high-capacity HaoHan BESS and the high-performance GC Flux PCS. EMS is designed for intelligent scheduling and efficient management in very large projects:

  • Supports the integration of up to 10 million measurement points, about 25% above the industry average
  • Single station management capacity: up to 15 GWh – 400% higher computing power than typical systems
