Wind power generation has multiplied in recent decades and there is no end in sight. And for good reason, because wind is an inexhaustible resource, available in abundance in certain regions. It is also one of the cheapest ways to produce energy.

If you are unable to use all the electricity produced yourself, the surplus is sold to the grid. If you are considering purchasing your own small wind turbine, you should first do a thorough study of its viability in the area where you plan to install it. The viability of a project depends essentially on two factors: the amount of wind in the area and the regularity of the wind. The Finnish Meteorological Institute, for example, produces wind maps that can be used to determine the amount of wind over the years.

The best locations are firstly open spaces where the wind can freely accelerate, for example islands, lakeshores, open fields or other open spaces without tall vegetation. The wind blows better at high altitude, so a hill is the best place to put them. On the other hand, the wind turbine is always built on a mast, which compensates for the low location.

Before deciding to buy a wind turbine, you should check with your municipality's building inspector what the building regulations are in your municipality. It is most common for a small wind turbine in an urban area to require a planning or building permit.
